Despite the rise in social media, email marketing continues to be an effective way for small businesses to reach their customers. Subject lines matter. According to Convince & Convert, 69% of email recipients report messages as spam based on the subject line alone. One way to avoid your emails being marked as spam is by personalizing the subject line. Adding the recipient’s name or location may also remind them that your newsletter is one they signed up for. Also, make sure your subject lines are descriptive enough to give recipients an idea of what they’ll find when they open the email. Think “Save 50% off our new sweater inventory” vs. “Our Awesome November Newsletter.”
Consider Automation. One of the most popular email automations is a welcome series that goes out to new subscribers on your list. Use three to five emails to give subscribers information that would endear your brand to them even more, such as a peek behind the scenes, the inspiration for your company and answers to anticipated questions. End the email series with a clear call to action that flows with the earlier emails. This could be to sign up for a consultation or purchase a product or service, for example. Once you’ve provided value in the first few emails, it won’t appear intrusive by asking for something in return.
