One of the biggest problem business owners face isn’t that they have a poor product or a bad service. It’s that no one knows they exist. I can relate. In my first company, I planned to design websites for other small business owners. I opened up shop eager to serve my first customer…and nothing happened. In fact, nothing happened for a while. I didn’t get my first customer for SIX MONTHS! Thankfully, after that first hurdle, things improved.
Even though I know much more about marketing now and even help other small businesses with it, there’s always more to learn. I wanted to know who my visitors were, if I was putting out the best content and whether I was optimizing my websites in a way that would attract the right people. To figure this out, I’m currently going through the 30-day challenge in Traffic Secrets: The Underground Playbook for Filling Your Websites and Funnels with Your Dream Customers by Russell Brunson.
What is Traffic Secrets All About?
If you’re not familiar with Russell Brunson, he’s a best-selling author and the CEO of $100M software company, ClickFunnels. He built a following of over a million entrepreneurs, sold hundreds of thousands of books and popularized the concept of sales funnels. You may have gone through his software system when signing up for your favorite expert’s mailing list.
In Traffic Secrets, Russell shares direct marketing techniques that will help you get in front of new trends and capitalize on new opportunities. The advice he gives is evergreen, so as the digital marketing landscape changes, your business will still be able to fill its website and funnels with your ideal clients. I’m about halfway through the challenge, and one thing I appreciated the most was the focus on understanding your dream audience.
In business, it’s easy to focus too much time on perfecting your products and services. Then when it comes time to market, the launch flops because you don’t know your audience or how to reach them. To win in business, Russell says you need to be obsessed with your customers. This means, “understanding them just as well, if not better, than they understand themselves” (page 15).
Your Dream Audience
By following the exercises in the book, I was able to uncover my dream audience. In my business, my dream audience is typically a woman who is a high-achiever. She did well in school and in her traditional job. Now she wants to use those skills in her own business. But it’s hard. Success isn’t coming as easy and she’s used to, and it can be discouraging. She’s looking for a trusted partner to walk her through the marketing process from start to finish. She also needs motivation as she moves through the process.
Knowing my dream audience and continuing to get familiar with her will inform my marketing copy, my offerings, the groups I join and even the networking activities that make the most sense for me. Traffic Secrets goes a step further and offers numerous suggestions on how you can find your audience on the Internet and attract them to your website. I look forward to incorporating more of these techniques as I continue the challenge.
Whether you’re new to business or a seasoned entrepreneur, if you’re looking to grow your business online, I encourage you to pick up a copy of Traffic Secrets: The Underground Playbook for Filling Your Websites and Funnels with Your Dream Customers by Russell Brunson. You’re sure to find a few techniques to help you better reach your audience and make your website more effective.
