Having a new client come into the office is something that can either be exciting or be dreaded. Some businesses will put on a façade whenever their clients stop by. This may sound wacky but think about it, it’s something that people will even do at home for guests. Offices aren’t always tidy so they’ll quickly clean up before the client arrives (just like at home), refreshments or other things will be offered that may not usually be offered or available (just like at home), and be tense and proper while the client is visiting, just like at home. See, having a client come over to the office and visit is pretty identical to how it is whenever a guest is visiting your home.

Regardless of the similarities, just like the guest visiting your home to feel welcomed, you also want your clients to feel the same. It’s important to leave that good impression on your clients, especially if this is going to be their first impression in-person. Since new clients can be so costly, and old clients can be even more costly, it’s always important to get them to feel completely welcomed when they’re visiting the office. Fortunately, these are some tips that can do just that.

Switch up the appearance

Take a good hard look at your office, how does it look? What about the other spaces in the businesses? While it may sound tempting to just tidy up the lobby and the meeting room, you’ll want to do a whole deep clean on the office. For one, it’s most likely time, and second, clients tend to expect tours. This gives you the chance to look into industrial floor scrubbers as well as other machines that could help make the cleaning process a lot easier.

You may also want to look into doing some minor renovations as well such as rearranging the office furniture, removing any stains from the carpet or ceiling, and maybe even giving the walls a fresh coat of paint. This is also going to benefit the employees as well. Employees love working in pretty spaces as this boosts their mood and keeps them productive.

Show that you’re genuine

Clients can smell fakeness from a mile away. There are some small business problems that are easy to solve and one of them is being real. Just be real, be genuine, and don’t put up and act.  Try to make your client feel special, ask about them (but don’t pry), and just sincerely try to get to know them. Some clients do want to establish a mix between a private and business-oriented relationship and this should be respected.

Think about how you greet your clients

This isn’t just about you, the business owner, but your employees as well. Look into giving yourself and your employees some training on how to handle clients and how to properly greet them. This doesn’t mean that the client should be treated like royalty but it would help to give your clients training on how they should talk to the client. Greetings can include in person, the phone, video calls, or even email. Always greet them with a smile so they know that they are welcomed.
