5 Worthwhile Security Investments for Construction Sites

As someone who works in the construction industry, you definitely understand the importance of keeping every job site as secure as possible. In addition to wanting to prevent the theft of expensive equipment, construction sites are inherently dangerous and you do not want bored teens to gain access only to fall and hurt themselves.

To prevent thieves and all other trespassers from entering your construction site after hours, it is imperative to invest in certain types of security systems and services. One way is to limit access to your construction site via smart cards from the Smart Card Store. You can have brand-specific cards printed up and install a card reader. Only access employees with smart cards to enter your area so you always know who’s onsite.

Check out the additional five suggestions:

Security Systems with Remote Viewing

While security cameras are great at capturing footage of thieves or vandals, you want to also be able to stop them in the act. To do this, invest in a mobile surveillance unit and monitoring system that lets you keep tabs on your construction site 24/7. Remote viewing of a construction site will let you see the area from any location or device that has online connectivity. Construction site security camera rentals are available from some companies, if you don’t want to buy. You and other supervisors can keep an eye on the site after hours and immediately alert authorities should any unauthorized people gain access.

Secure Perimeter Fencing

To prevent people from getting into the job site, a strong and secure fence is a must. The fence must go all the way around the perimeter and be high enough to discourage climbing over it. It must also be locked after hours and include a minimum number of gates and access points. The keys to these locks should be kept by a general contractor or security guard; the keys can then be logged out as needed to allow for access to certain approved locations.

Install Bright Lights

A dark construction site is figuratively beckoning to burglars and vandals to get inside and do some serious damage. To prevent this from happening, invest in some high-quality lighting that is bright and can be left on all night long. The perimeter fence should be well-lit, in addition to storage areas that contain equipment and materials.

Employ Security Guards

Employing security guards to keep watch on the job site overnight and on weekends is also a great investment. If you have not worked with a security company before, ask other construction site entrepreneurs who they would recommend or check reviews online before interviewing a few companies. Have the security guards stay visible under the lighting; seeing that you have a guard on the premises will deter most bad guys from trying to break in.

Post Signs

A relatively budget-friendly way to boost construction site security is by purchasing and posting security signs announcing that the area is protected by security camera systems and/or security guards. Put signs near all of the entry points where thieves may be likely to gain access. Burglars will typically pass by sites that have security signs; they would rather move onto a dark and unprotected construction site to do their dirty work.

There is nothing worse than getting to a job site in the morning only to find that thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment is missing or broken. Making a construction site more secure is not terribly difficult, and once you have made the initial investment in certain equipment, you can keep future sites more secure for less money. It’s definitely a smart investment.
