Steps To Take To Keep Your Employees Safe

As an employer and business owner, one of the things that should be at the top of your list of priorities is your employees and their safety. If an employee gets hurt at work, they could be off for months, or even more, and if it’s really serious, they might never come back. This is going to massively reduce the productivity of your business and put a strain on everyone else. You could also be in a lot of trouble if it can be proved that you haven’t done all that you can to prevent this incident. While all of this is important, the most important point is the fact that your employees help your business to survive every single day, so you owe it to them to do everything you can to keep your employees safe. Here are a few steps that you must take to do this.

Conduct A Risk Assessment

As an employer, it is your responsibility to conduct a risk assessment of the space where your employees work and spot any potential hazards. A hazard is basically anything in the workplace that could cause harm or injury to your employees. When you conduct this risk assessment, you should make a not of all of these potential hazards, and then do all that you can to reduce the risk. For example, if your employees work at height, one risk is them falling, so you would have to get some fall protection equipment. If there’s nothing that you can physically do to minimize the risk, put up signs to warn your employees that there is a risk there.

Log All Incidents

You are legally required to report any and all injuries that occur at work, as well diseases, and certain incidents, so don’t be caught out, or you could get into a lot of trouble. While logging incidents keeps you safe, it can also keep your employees safe, as they can then learn from the things that other people did. This log will also identify any hazards that you might not have considered before, so you can try to prevent an injury occurring again.

Provide Proper Training

It is essential that all of your employees know what to do when they come across a possible hazard in the workplace, and that they know what to do after an incident has occurred. If the incident isn’t that serious, that could just be reporting it to you immediately, but if the incident is more dangerous, there may be specific procedures that they have to follow. These could include grabbing a first aid kit for a cut, phoning an ambulance, or performing CPR. Having an employee handbook that explains all of these procedures is always sensible, especially if you have a large workforce.

Safety should be one of your greatest priorities as a business owner and employer. Keeping your employees safe is a long and complicated process, but it is essential for the sake of your business, and those that help to keep it running smoothly.
