Protect Your Construction Business – Know Before You Dig

know-before-you-digAre you wondering where an Advanced Geosciences resistivity survey would be used most often? This survey is a process of shooting electrical impulses into the earth and tracking their movement; the speeds that they travel at can tell you what is below the surface, showing you what types of materials and elements you are dealing with and also showing how far those plates and slabs reach. This is useful in many different places, including the following:

1. Construction Sites
Before building a home or a business, workers need to make sure that they are actually building on soil that can support the project. They do not want to build over unstable land, which could make the building settle quickly and dangerously, making it structurally unsound. They will do a survey before they dig out the soil or lay the foundation. Often, this is done long before anyone even buys the lot to determine if it should be classified as a buildable lot or not.

2. Mining Operations
Mining companies want to know what is underground before they commit to building an entire mine. This is true if they are looking for precious metals, coal, oil or something else altogether. If the survey can tell them where to dig, they can save a lot of time and ensure that the whole project is done on the right site. They will usually search for the elements that they want with resistivity meters before digging at all.

3. Fault Lines
Mapping fault lines is important because earthquakes occur along these lines. In some cases, finding a fault line means that a building project will not go through. Most of the time, though, it just means that special steps will be taken to ensure that the building is safe even though it is on that line. There are many things that can be done to make a building safe in an earthquake zone, but you have to know that the fault line exists before you can do them.

4. Pipelines
Pipelines that are being laid underground must be stable and safe. The crew needs to know that there are no underground rivers or other surprises in the area. If a pipeline breaks and begins to leak, it can cause a ton of damage to the environment, so taking all steps possible to prevent this from happening is very important to the company in charge.
