Getting Licensed

You will also have a background and character check. If you are operating in the capital, you will need to apply to Transport for London (TfL) to see if you are eligible. With both, it is likely that you will need to pass a medical check, a driving test of the area and pay a fee for the license.
Self Employed or Cab Firm
Once you have a license you could then set up a business as a self-employed taxi driver or join a firm. If you go down the self-employed route you will need to purchase your own taxi. You could buy a purpose-built taxi or standard taxi from a specialist like Cab Direct.
Skills Required
In order to be successful as a taxi driver, you will need more than a license and a suitable vehicle. To build a reputation you will need to be a good and safe driver, you will need a detailed knowledge of the area and solid people skills. You should be able to converse with people easily and be willing to help them get into and out of the vehicle. It is also helpful if you have good maths skills.
