4 Ways to Improve Morale in the Workplace

There’s no doubt about it, Covid-19 ushered in a new era of workplace expectations. Unemployment is at its lowest in decades, yet “help wanted” signs continue to appear all over the country. It’s not that there is a shortage of labor, workers are just being more selective with the jobs they are choosing to take. Criteria like work-life balance, higher pay, and positive company culture have become more important for the labor force. Whether your company deals with highly specialized products, like homogenizes from Bee International, or something more universal like a cafe or public school, high morale in the workplace is essential for productivity. Here are 4 ways to improve morale in your office.

  1. Perks

Probably the simplest way to bring positivity to the workplace is by offering simple perks. The occasional bagel breakfast, coffee run, or catered lunch can go a long way in making employees feel appreciated. Beyond the realm of free food, consider company apparel or an all-inclusive outing that encourages community and camaraderie in a relaxed setting.

  1. Flexibility

Allowing flexible working hours and conditions is also a great way to improve the work environment and keep employees happy. Let’s be real, the recent pandemic forced many companies to move their work online or to some sort of digital platform that does not require a physical presence in the office. There are definitely occasions where it’s necessary to be in one place, face-to-face, but the flexibility to work from home as needed or take PTO without worrying about running out of days takes a huge burden off of workers.  Allowing employees the independence to make decisions about their schedules often garners so much appreciation, that there isn’t a decrease in work productivity.

  1. Continued Education

Continued education may not seem like a huge boost of morale, but when employees are well trained and feel confident in their abilities, they may be more likely to perform at a higher level with less stress. Placing an emphasis on constant improvement also sets a great tone for a workplace. It shows that the company has invested in their employees and they are dedicated to providing a successful work environment.

  1. Buying-In

Whether its kids watching their parents, students listening to teachers, or employees observing their bosses, leading by example is key. If an owner of an organization doesn’t find merit in company practices, why would the employees? Positions of authority have to buy-in to what they’re selling in order to promote a positive company culture.

The relationship between business and labor is changing and companies that make an effort to create a positive work environment are leading the pack. Improving morale is just one way to become a desirable employer.
