If you are considering changing your career, you are not alone. A lot of people have been in the same job since they left school and feel like it’s time for a change – and have been successful when changing. Changing careers may not be as hard as you may think it is. Now, there are many different methods that you can take up in order to retrain, learn new skills and put yourself in the best position to make that change.

Depending on the time you have available to learn, you could look into an open university. Some people like to sign up to online courses, whilst others prefer to volunteer in their spare time in order to get some experience. Whether you are a personal trainer and want to switch things up and become a mechanic working with Cummins Engine Parts, or you are a teacher and you want to move into recruitment, it is very much possible.

Below are our three tips for changing your career.

Enroll on an online course

To start with, take a moment to browse the web and see what online courses are available for you to sign up to. Now that technology has advanced so much, there are many new providers who can train you from the comfort of your own home – some even guaranteeing you an interview once you qualify. Depending on which provider you choose, some courses are free, some with a low price tag whilst others will give you professional qualifications and cost more. Before signing up for one, spend a moment reading the customer reviews and see what previous applicants thought of the course when they signed up for it. When you change careers, hopefully, you will find that inner peace at work.

Volunteer in your free time

A lot of people don’t want to go back down the educational route as they haven’t done it in a long time. This is completely fair enough, which is why volunteering in your free time could be a better option. Volunteering gives you the chance to get hands-on in the new career you are interested in. It gives you real-life experience and a chance to see if you would really like to do the job – The perception of a job can sometimes be very different when you do it. Try to find a company that will accept you in the evenings after work or spend a day a week of your weekend volunteering. If you don’t like it, you can always give it up and try something else.

Open university

Have you ever thought about going back into education and studying for a degree? Certain careers require you to have a specific qualification or level of education in order for them to consider you. If you want to retrain but don’t have the time to do it full time, then an open university could be for you. By signing up, you can study at your own pace in the comfort of your own home. The only time you normally have to go to the university is to take an exam but this can be done in your local establishment.
