Many entrepreneurs seek additional education before starting their businesses, but the price of education or a start-up can be daunting to prospective students. When faced with the question of how to pay for your degree it may be tempting to run away and hide rather than face up to the issue. But it doesn’t have to be such a scary topic.
There are plenty of funding and scholarship opportunities available to students from all backgrounds. So whether you’re planning on studying engineering, art or science, here are some top tips to make your funding application stand out from the crowd.
Plan ahead
Before you start your application for funding, you should make a comprehensive list of your outstanding attributes. Note any strengths and accomplishments that you feel are worthy of note. You could ask a colleague to help you set out your achievements.
Are you qualified?
It may seem obvious, but it’s essential to make sure that the scholarship you’re applying for is tailored to the course you’ll be undertaking, whether it’s a BS in Economics or an MBA in Entrepreneurship. There are plenty of websites that offer comprehensive search guidelines to help you find the right scholarship to suit your needs.
Gain experience
Depending on the field of study that you wish to enter, it’s wise to try and gain some extra experience around it to make your application stand out from the rest. So if, for instance, you wish to undertake a veterinary degree with a scholarship, aim to work with animals in your summer holidays and at weekend.
Shine
Don’t be afraid to shout about your achievements. You should aim to be honest without modesty, though try not to seem too boastful. Pinpoint examples of times you’ve gone above and beyond to contribute to society. If they ask you to note weaknesses, choose something you can turn into a positive.
Passion
Allow your enthusiasm for your subject to come out throughout your application. The selection panel want to give their funds to someone who is actively passionate about their topic as well as an impressive scholar. Show the panel that you really care about your subject and believe that you have what it takes to be outstanding in this field.
Be vigilant
Bear in mind that you’re trying to sell yourself as the cream of the crop, so you should be extra careful when it comes to filling out a funding application. Selection panels will often discard an application that has been filled out incorrectly, even if it’s only a small misspelling. Check and double check your information before you send it off. Don’t rush and if possible, ask a friend or partner to read over it for you.
Start early
Don’t leave it until the last minute to start your application. They can be quite time consuming and it’s not a case of one size fits all. Each funding body will have a different set of guidelines, so it’s wise to know your market well in advance. Never try to send in a late application without a very good reason.
Try not to be upset or put off if you don’t receive funding at first; apply to several different bodies and be as clear and concise as possible. With careful planning and a vigilant attitude towards your own future, a scholarship is within your grasp.
