Being a business owner brings with it a lot of responsibility not least the health and safety of employees, visitors, and clients. Health and safety is something that no business can afford to overlook and is one of the most significant responsibilities that a business owner can face. Not only will well-maintained premises protect your employees and visitors it will help keep your company protected from potentially costly litigation and liability claims.

A great and effective way to start when it comes to ensuring all health and safety practices are compliant and in line with relevant laws and regulations is to ensure that you are providing a safe place for your staff to work. This includes undertaking all maintenance as and when it is required, performing risk assessments, and testing relevant electricals to ensure their compliance and safety. It is also a good idea to ensure that all employees understand the health and safety practices required of them to ensure the environment remains a safe place. You will also need to ensure that your building does not compromise the health and safety of employees and visitors.

First impressions

Looking beyond the health and safety aspects there is another vital reason that you should prioritize the upkeep of your premises, and that is the first and lasting impression your premises gives of your business.

Having smart and maintained premises will ensure your business looks and feels professional. It will be welcoming to clients or customers and will help install confidence and trust in your business. Being a trusted and respected professional business will undoubtedly serve your business when it comes to profitability and longevity. Further than this, it will also help to improve employee job satisfaction, comfort, and professional pride in their workplace.

Ways you can help to maintain the upkeep, initial and lasting impression of your business is to first start with the exterior as this is the first thing people will see. This will be the first impression people have of your business. If you have a parking lot consider utilizing commercial parking lot maintenance services to ensure it is smart, safe, and well maintained. Ensure the exterior of your premises is in good working order and that it is clean and tidy. Any paintwork that needs touching up should be done, windows and doors should be cleaned, there should be no debris or mess on the grounds, and any greenery should also be well maintained and smart.

This also extends to the interior of the premises, the interior should be well presented, clean, and tidy. It should be warm and welcoming to staff and customers alike. Again, floors should be clear, surfaces tidy and the interior decoration maintained and professional.

Insurance

Insurance is one of those things that nobody really wants to pay for but everybody is grateful that they did should they be in the unfortunate position to need it. Having insurance for your business premises is essential and you will need to ensure that you have the correct level of cover for your business needs. To help keep your premiums down and ensure compliance with your insurance policy terms and conditions then you will be required to maintain a certain level of building and premises maintenance.

Employee satisfaction and comfort

Considering the well-being of your staff is another critical aspect of running a successful business. As mentioned, your business premises is where your staff will spend the majority of their working week, potentially their week and it should be as welcoming and comfortable as possible. You can do this by considering some of the following;

  • Temperature, your premises should be a perfect ambient temperature, not too hot or too cold.
  • Cleanliness, all facilities should be clean and hygienic for use.
  • Comfort, all office equipment, tools, seating, etc should be well maintained and comfortable for use.
  • Equipment, all equipment that is required for employees to perform their role should be readily available, maintained, and safe.
  • Healthy and safety, as per the above maintaining health and safety for your employees’ wellbeing is essential.

Having a comfortable working environment can influence the way your employees feel about their job. If your premises are run down, poorly equipped and poorly maintained staff are more likely to feel undervalued. This in turn can affect their productivity and their relationship with their work.

Cleanliness

Cleanliness has never been more important than it has over the last two years. Ensuring the complete cleanliness of your premises will not only lead to positive assumptions being made about your business it will also help customers and employees feel safe and in turn valued when visiting your business. Showing that you take cleanliness very importantly will ensure your business stands out from its competitors and provide endless goodwill with staff and customers alike.

A great way to ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of your business can be to employ cleaning contractors to keep your workplace clean and looking its best. It may also help encourage employees to keep it that way.

Minimizing maintenance costs

There will be a certain level of cost involved in keeping premises maintained and in good working order but you can reduce this cost by keeping on top of things on a regular basis. To reduce your overheads and avoid large unexpected bills it is advised that anything that breaks is fixed immediately, and maintenance that needs doing is tended to as a priority and everything is kept clean and tidy. If repairs are left and upkeep allowed to fall into disrepair it will only result in a longer and more expensive clean-up bill, all of which is totally avoidable.

Security

Finally, security is another vital aspect of keeping your staff, customers, and equipment safe. Investing in security will save you money in the long run and is something that should be taken very seriously. Ways in which you can enhance your security are as follows;

  • Employing security guards to oversee day or night time security. Security guards can monitor who comes in and out of premises and act accordingly should there be a breach in security.
  • Utilize CCTV. While CCTV may not be able to do anything in the case of a breach of security it can act as a deterrent to avoid any breaches happening in the first place.
  • Physical alterations such as double bolted locks, shutters, and alarm systems are useful for helping to keep intruders out and to act as potential deterrents.
  • Cyber security. Technology is integral to most businesses and security extends beyond the physical premises. Investing in cyber security is essential for protecting sensitive data, finances, and business operations.
