Tips to Help Your Business Recycle More (and Why You Should Bother)

If you run a business, chances are you produce a lot of waste. Not only is it a burden trying to stop this waste from taking over your office, factory or store, but you may even have to pay to have it taken away too. For those reasons, and because improving your green credentials is a good way to positively promote your company and appeal to the environmentally conscious section of the public, recycling more of the trash you produce is probably a very good idea!

With that in mind, here are some simple tips to help your business recycle more:

Reducing Waste

Although this post is about recycling, it is worth considering the fact that the easiest way to recycle more is by producing less in the first place. After all, if you don’t produce so much trash, you won’t have to worry about finding new ways to recycle and how you can improve your efforts in that department.

Good ways to reduce waste include having your staff bring in their own mugs, or even better, buying a set for them to use in place of paper or plastic ones, using scrap paper instead of post-it notes or paper pads and using both sides of the paper when printing.

Make it Easy

The easier you make it for everyone in your business to recycle, the more likely it is that they will do it. So, invest in a few more recycling bins and locate them in the most convenient locations, typically close to desks and workstations and in high traffic areas. Make sure that the bins are clearly markets, so that your employees know what goes where, and you won’t have too many problems.

Make a Competition of It

Another good way to increase the amount of recycling your company does is by making a competition of it. Divide your employees into teams (you can also do this individually) and set them the challenge of collecting as much trash in their own assigned recycling cans as they can. At the end of the week/month, weight the recycling and the winning team gets a prize. It might seem corny, but you’d be surprised just how effective it can be.

Invest in a Briquette Machine

A briquetting machine might seem like an unnecessary purchase, but when you think about it, if you produce a lot of waste, turning it into briquettes and using them to provide your workplace with heat will save you a lot of money in the long-term. Boost your green credentials, which could boost your bottom line, and solve the problem of what to do with all those mounds of paper and card waste. They’re a pretty perfect solution!

These solutions, although simple, can go a long way to reducing the amount of trash you send to the local dump, where it will do no one any good, They will also help to increase your company’s efficiency and help you to sell yourself as a more caring company – there literally are no downsides to making an effort to recycle more!
