Ship Shape: How To Keep Your Vessel Running As Efficiently As Possible

The marine industry has faced some pretty difficult times over the past few years. With rising oil prices, reduced emissions targets and more strict environmental regulations, there is a lot of pressure on crews to make sure that their ship is running as smoothly as possible. Under these conditions, the most important thing that needs to happen is that steps need to be taken to increase the level of efficiency in the marine sector. And to do this, those steps need to start out on the ships themselves. Luckily, some of those steps can be easier to implement than you might otherwise think. With that in mind, here are a few ways in which you can keep your vessel in ship-shape while saving money.

Manage fuel consumption

Fuel is by far the biggest out of all of a ship’s operating costs, accounting for about fifty percent. This means that being able to correctly manage fuel consumption is incredibly important if you want to keep costs down and make sure that your ship is always running at full capacity. Using the right equipment to keep the ship on course is one of the best ways to manage fuel consumption, as course correction can end up using huge amounts of fuel.

Reduce equipment costs

You should always make sure that your ship’s equipment is high quality and well maintained, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to find ways to reduce the costs. Finding the correct supplier for things like calibration gas can save you massive amounts of both time and money. It’s also worth checking out any credit payment options available to avoid having to spend large sums of money all at once,

Invest in training

Your crew are the heart of your ship, and there is simply no way that it could possibly function without them. But if you really want to get the most out of your crew then it’s a great idea to invest in the correct training for them. Training means that your crew are that much better equipped to deal with any problems that may face them while out at sea. Not only that but a well-trained crew will same will do a great deal to help you reduce staffing costs. Since you’ll do far better with a well trained crew than with a poorly trained one twice it’s size.

Improve your propulsion system

There’s a good chance that, if you’re using an outdated propulsion system, it’s taking up far too much room as well as wasting power. By switching to a gas turbine propulsion system, you’re able to free up huge amounts of space which can be much better used for carrying cargo. This means that you’re able to generate more revenue with each trip. You can also use electric propulsion systems which will do even more to reduce emissions and cut costs while still offering a reduced footprint to allow for greater amounts of storage space.
