Make Your Business Cards Interactive: Add a QR Code

When small business consider how to promote themselves effectively, online marketing and social media are often at the top of the list.  Unlike traditional advertising, online marketing can be measured and analyzed as to how well its providing a suitable return on investment.

Unfortunately, online marketing doesn’t capture the intangible benefits derived from face-to-face interaction. In these types of in-person meetings exchanging business cards becomes a point of referral for future interaction. And while business cards can easily be lost, sophisticated business owners are now providing access to additional information via QR codes.

QR_Code_Business_Card_800x518-1A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is a matrix barcode (machine-readable optical label) that can easily be scanned by a mobile device to learn more about a company or business. Used in tandem with  networking, QR codes on the back of business cards help potential clients better assess who they just met. But it’s not enough to just link a QR code to a company’s home page. Today’s consumer expects a QR code to provide a more interactive and personalized experience (i.e., videos, images, and touch navigation).

Business owners may thus deploy QR-imaged business cards as one element of a sophisticated marketing campaign.  For instance, depending on the goals of the campaign and the budget available, business cards can be customized with QR codes that link to a variety of media messages. Accordingly, social networking events become a much greater source of consumer information and feedback.

Marketers also appreciate business cards with QR codes because they help “coax interested prospects down the conversion funnel.” In other words, they help encourage a potential consumer down the purchase path. Instead of being filed away in a rolodex, business cards help companies increase the chance that the contacts they make will become a sale.

Marketing with business cards has changed B2B social networking as well. For instance, a seller no longer has to provide a long-winded explanation of their product or service. A simple QR scan can help inform a potential buyer of what is involved. Sales associates seeking to pursue this strategy will have the ability to learn rather quickly how their messaging impacts both consumer interest and purchase.

Today, a simple business card with a QR code on back can help even companies with limited budgets created a clever and strategic marketing campaign.  With QR codes, business cards become exponentially more valuable to the consumer, the sales person, and the marketing professional.
