How To Put More Talent In Your Candidate Pool

Recruiting talented individuals is one of the most difficult challenges in any business. Companies often attempt to overcome this challenge by casting a wider net: If we bring in more candidates, we stand a better chance of finding several that are truly outstanding.

This approach appears to be sensible … but is altogether wrong! According to research published in the Harvard Business Review (Groysberg et. al 2009), improving the quality of assessments is three times more effective than increasing the size of the candidate pool, and six times more profitable than getting the chosen candidate to accept a lower compensation package.

With these crucial data points in mind, the infographic below will help entrepreneurs and small companies that recognize the value of improving their assessment capabilities but lack a deep bench of human resource specialists with the experience and knowledge to construct an effective assessment strategy.

Even with a cursory glance at the infographic, it becomes evident that any effective assessment strategy requires more than one assessment method. For instance, if a company that places high value on culture and teamwork relies heavily on personality assessments, it may saddle itself with new employees that fit in well but lack technical and functional skills. Or, a company that places high value on competence, and therefore relies on cognitive and abstract reasoning tests, may recruit employees with great learning ability but lack critical team building and cultural qualities.

Of course, to make any assessment strategy work, a company must first understand what it is looking for in a candidate — not only the specific attributes (such as technical skills and leadership), but also their relative importance. In entrepreneurial businesses, the owner understands these issues intuitively, but documenting those insights ensures that all team members involved in recruiting have a clear, shared vision.
