Attracting Your Target Audience to Your Website

It goes without saying that, whether you’re a solopreneur, a small business or a huge corporation, right now, here in the 21st Century, you need to have a website if you want to reach as many people as possible, and therefore reach your full potential in business.

Of course, once you have a website up and running, you reach the next hurdle, which is convincing people to visit your website and not just any people, but the people who represent your target audience. After all, if you have 100 people visiting your website each day, but only 30 of them are the kind of people who are likely to be interested in the products and services you offer, you aren’t exactly going to see your sales rocket, and you will have wasted countless hours of your time. Not to mention lots of money, all for nothing! That just won’t do!

Thankfully, there are numerous things you can do to attract your target audience to your website where they will hopefully make a purchase…


First, Create Great Content

There is no getting around the fact that if you want to attract any visitors to your website, let alone those who represent your target audience, you need to create top-notch content that actually gives them a reason to come flocking.

If you are putting content out there, then you need to ensure that it is accurate, well-researched and engaging. If it isn’t, if visitors do come to your website once, it’s unlikely they’ll do so again, and they probably won’t buy anything. No, you need to be an expert if you want to attract people and make sales. That might mean hiring a good copywriter or two from places like or, but it will be worth it when your website is seen as an authority. If visitors believe yours is a good website, they’ll be more confident in making a purchase.


Next, Optimize Your Website

Once you have some solid content written, you absolutely must ensure that it is SEO optimized, and that so is the rest of your website. If you want your content to be on the first page of Google, and you do because that is as far as most people will get when they’re looking for something, then your content needs to contain keywords that your target audience will search for.

A good way to ensure that your content is optimized to appeal to your target audience is by using a genre-specific SEO company, like or to do the work for you. They are experts in their niche, and that means they know exactly what will work to bring your target audience flocking to buy your goods and services.


Now, Share Your Content with Your Audience

Of course, writing excellent content, or having someone else write them, and ensuring that they are as perfectly optimized as they can be, although it might be pretty effective, is not all you should do. Ideally, one your content has been written, you should share it in as many places as possible where your target audience congregates. This could be social media pages related to your niche, web forums or via your own newsletters. Doing this will ensure that more people see your content, even if they don’t visit your website regularly, and it will make it much more likely that your content will be reshared too.


Try Guest Blogging Too

Writing content for your own website might be a priority, but a good way to reach more of your target audience is by writing guest blogs which will be posted on the websites and blogs of other people in your niche. If you post to well-established blogs with lots of monthly views and you include a link to your website in your post, you should see a significant spike in your traffic, and it should be from people who are within your target audience or at least somewhat interested in your niche.


Also, Use Hashtags

Using hashtags is a great way to get more interest in your content, and therefore to send more traffic to your website, because millions of people on social media use hashtags to find content they might be interested in every day. If you can identify popular hashtags that relate, in some way, to the content you produce or the goods and services you sell, then it could be a very effective way of attracting more visitors your way.


Run a Competition or Giveaway

Everyone likes to get something for free, so it’s fair to say that running giveaways and competitions on social media, which require participants to visit your website if they want to win, is a great way to boost traffic. Just make sure that the thing you’re giving away if it isn’t one of your own products or services, is at least linked to what you do that way you’ll mostly just attract your target audience. Make the giveaway as straightforward to enter as possible to maximize the amount of traffic it generates.

If you want to herd your target audience towards your website and ultimately convince them to part with their money while they’re there, you really do need to implement as many if these practices as you can. You might see some success using one or two at first, but the views are likely to drop off, and you are unlikely to get anywhere near as many visitors as you could if you implemented them all. Obviously, this will take time, and you probably won’t be able to implement every suggestion right now, but you should at least be working towards doing so.


Take Your Campaign Offline

Because you’re trying to attract your target audience to your website, you could be forgiven for solely focussing your efforts online, but most of the time, this would be a mistake. If for example, you run a business running cupcake classes, you know that your target audience are likely to be women who like cupcakes and who are interested in baking. That gives you a few ideas of the kind of real-world locations they are likely to hang out at -cupcake stores, craft shops, baking supply companies etc. So, it could be a smart idea to ask those companies if they’d be willing to hand out your business card, allow you to hang posters or even let you set up a stall outside to try and attract customers. Providing what you do doesn’t clash with the things they offer, there’s no reason why they wouldn’t especially if you can make the deal benefit them in some way too, so it is definitely worth the effort.


Attend Conferences and Events

Similarly, if there are any annual conferences and events in your niche, like Comic-Con for comic book retailers, it is certainly worth attending them with a trade stand for your business. Hand out business cards featuring your website’s URL, along with a few other freebies, get to know attendees and basically do whatever you can to make your company stand out and people will visit your website afterwards.


Consider Podcasting

Right now, podcasting has never been more popular, and if you’re smart, you’ll get in on the action to increase visits to your website. Sit down and think about the goods and services you offer and the kind of people who by them. Come up with a related topic that you think people will happily listen to your talk about and then create a podcast around it. You can then use your podcast to direct people to your website and advertise your company. Who knows, you might even become a podcast superstar too!

If you run the kind of business that solves people’s problems, either by offering information or products to help them out, you could direct more traffic to your website by producing instructional videos for Youtube and Instructables. Not only could these websites send more targeted traffic your way, but you could also use them to advertise your stuff effectively too.


Get to Know Them

Of course, in the age of social media, one of the best ways to send more targeted traffic to your website is by getting to know your target audience. Join Facebook pages, sign up to forums and get involved on Twitter. Once your face is known as part of the community, people will come to trust you, and they will take a natural interest in what you do, allowing you to direct them to your website. Just make sure that you genuinely interact with them, and make a real effort to get involved – don’t just spam them with promotional stuff – not only is it not cool, but your target audience will see right through you, and you’ll have wasted your time, too.

Once you’ve implemented all these things, you should see visitor numbers increase along with sales, and eventually your business too!
