5 Things You Can Do to Increase the Life of Your UPS Battery

When the power goes out in your business and it’s dark everywhere, then you need a reliable backup energy source like a UPS battery from Sure Power. A UPS battery is important if you want to continue work without any hiccups. We live in an era where we are used to working using electric appliances, and even 5 minutes of interruption can cause havoc, especially when it comes to industries.

We all know the importance of a UPS battery, however, we often tend to forget that a UPS and especially its battery needs regular maintenance for it to continue to work smoothly. A UPS comes with a limited battery life, but it can be extended with proper care.

Generally, the batteries are required to be replaced with new ones in the time span of two to three years and that can be quite costly.

There are some preventive measures that can help you extend the life expectancy of your UPS battery. Without much ado let’s have a look at five things you can do to increase the life of your UPS battery.

Use Carefully

A UPS has its limitations, including the load it can handle. If you put more pressure on it than it is supposed to handle, you will end up destroying the battery. Try to put only 60% of the maximum load on a regular basis, unless it is vital to use it to its maximum capacity. However, if you do so, you need to remember that you will drain your battery and it will begin to lose its capacity.

For instance, if a UPS battery can bear a maximum load of 1000 watts then do not apply more than 500-600 watts in routine to keep it functioning for a longer period of time. Also avoid applying variable loads at a time that consume more energy like televisions, computers etc.

Refill Water in Time

Keep the water level of batteries in check, look for it twice a month. To refill, use only prescribed water and avoid refilling batteries with tap water as it contains salts that strongly affect the working power or efficiency of the batteries. For best results, buy water made for batteries. You can use water released from the air conditioners, if you have no other option.

Prevent from Overheating

Keep the UPS and batteries in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Overheating may cause damage to internal sensitive circuits, shortening the lifetime of your UPS battery.

Avoid Overuse

If there is a long power breakdown do not keep the UPS running until the batteries die. Avoid batteries from discharging completely and turn the UPS off after 3-4 hours of use, or based on the prescribed capacity.

Preventive Maintenance is Always Better

Focus on preventive maintenance to avoid high replacement costs later. Use high quality wiring equipment or pure copper wiring to keep the batteries effectively working for a longer period of time.
